Manager - Science, Regulatory Affairs & Government Relations 

 

The Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers (OGVG) is offering an exciting opportunity to support all matters related to Science, Regulatory Affairs and Government Relations as they apply to Ontario’s greenhouse vegetable farmers. OGVG is a farmer run organization that supports and promotes the sector through advocacy, research and value chain co-ordination so that members are presented the opportunity to succeed. Our vision is to be recognized as global leaders in greenhouse vegetable production. 

 

Position Description: 

General: Reporting to the General Manager, the position oversees the areas of COVID response, workforce support, energy, environment and climate change, and develops policy in alignment with the OGVG strategic plan. This includes positioning the sector to take advantage of, or respond to, various municipal, provincial and federal policy initiatives including coordinating responses to regulatory, legislative or policy consultations. He/she will be responsible for working closely with external stakeholders in academia, industry, NGOs and government, and representing OGVG at multi-stakeholder meetings to ensure the needs of the growers are recognized. 

COVID-19 Response: Act as the staff lead on the organization’s COVID response including: 

  • Keeping up to date with all public health, policy, and programming updates. 

  • Keeping members up to date on all developments. 

  • Working with government to develop policies and programs that support the sector. 

  • Coordinating with health care partners to respond to potential outbreak events. 

 

Workforce Support: Act as the staff lead for all workforce related matters including: 

  • Responding to issues and developing policies related to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) in collaboration with sector partners such as OFVGA and the Canadian Horticultural Council. 

  • Collaborate with community partners and government to ensure employees here under the TFWP are supported. 

  • Support recruitment and educational efforts that encourage employment in the sector. 

 

Energy, Environment & Climate Change: 
 

  • Act as the staff resource for the OGVG Energy and Environment committee, including organization of meetings and preparation of agendas, minutes and information. 

  • Stay up to date on developments in energy, environment, climate change and infrastructure as they may relate to the greenhouse sector and disseminate relevant updates to the membership. 

  • Liaise with key stakeholders including government at all levels, utility providers, regulators, relevant industry stakeholders and NGOs. 

  • Act as the lead on sustainability initiatives such as reducing waste, recycling and organic waste management. 

 

Competencies and Experience Desired: 

  • A strong technical background in the fields of science and/or engineering with a minimum of an undergraduate degree, Masters or Ph. D. preferred. 

  • Strong organizational, project and time management skills with an acute attention to detail, including the ability to concurrently manage multiple projects and initiatives in an efficient manner. 

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with grower-members, government staff and stakeholders as required. 

  • Ability to pivot relative to the audience communicating to as needed. 

  • Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with a varied group of stakeholders. 

  • Experience with regulatory and/or legislative consultation processes. 

  • Knowledge of the greenhouse or horticulture sector in Ontario and federal/provincial funding mechanisms is an asset. 

  • Previous work experience in agriculture or the greenhouse sector is an asset. 

  • Valid “G” driver’s license and access to a vehicle. 

  • Must be able and willing to travel as required. 

 

Salary commensurate with experience, qualifications, and experience. The position is located in Leamington, ON with discretionary options for remote work as well.
